The event took place on Saturday, 1 February, around 12:40 p.m., during a wedding banquet hosted at a family residence. Posing as an invited guest, the woman claimed she needed to use the washroom to gain access to the home. Once inside, CCTV footage captured her taking a handbag placed atop a shelf before calmly leaving the scene. The stolen handbag reportedly contained RM2,500 in cash.
The Malayan Secret Society captioned the footage, "Disguised as a guest, she used the toilet and stole RM2,500 in cash."
This incident has sparked widespread discussion online, with many Malaysians sharing their views on the importance of security during home-based events. Comments highlighted a growing preference for hosting banquets at external venues or community halls, where security measures can be more effectively managed.
"This is why many people prefer holding events in halls nowadays. It's safer, and you don't have to worry about strangers walking into your home,” while another commenter said: "I trust no one. Situations like this are why people avoid having big gatherings at home."
"If you must host at home, ensure valuables are locked in a secure room, and don’t give anyone access to the key,” another person commented.
If you're planning to host an event at home, consider the following precautions to safeguard your belongings:
-
Secure Valuables: Keep cash, jewellery, and other valuables locked in a secure room with limited access.
-
Assign Trusted Individuals: Designate a trusted family member or friend to monitor guests discreetly.
-
Use CCTV Cameras: Install cameras at key points within and outside your home for added security.
-
Limit Access: Restrict access to private areas and clearly mark guest-friendly spaces.
-
Guest List Awareness: Be aware of who is attending, especially if the event is open to extended family and acquaintances.
Taking these simple yet effective steps can help ensure your celebration remains joyful and free from unpleasant surprises.
