Woman Refuses to Meet Boyfriend's Parents After Getting “Disappointing” RM5 Angpau

A woman has sparked debate online after sharing her reasons for refusing to meet her boyfriend's parents, despite making numerous efforts to build a good relationship with them.

According to a report by The Independent Singapore, the woman took to Reddit to ask if she was wrong for declining her boyfriend's request to visit his parents. In her post, she detailed the many ways she had tried to show appreciation to his family over the years.

She mentioned regularly sending gifts to his parents' home after returning from overseas trips and giving thoughtful presents during festive seasons, particularly Chinese New Year.

"They live in Johor, but his parents work in Singapore with moderate incomes, even by Singaporean standards," she wrote.

After two years of being in a serious relationship, she finally decided to visit her boyfriend’s parents during Chinese New Year last year, hoping it would be a meaningful and memorable experience as it was her first time meeting them in person.

However, her excitement quickly turned into disappointment when she received an angpau containing just RM5. To her surprise, even her boyfriend received the same amount from his own parents, while his aunt had given more, "The moment I opened it, I couldn’t hide my disappointment. I even checked the angpau my boyfriend received from them, and it was also RM5!

"Honestly, it’s the smallest angpau I’ve ever received in my life. I would have been fine if they had at least given my boyfriend RM10.

"We’re in a serious relationship, but honestly, I don’t know how I can face them again after this," she wrote.

Her post has since sparked mixed reactions from netizens, with some sympathising with her feelings while others criticised her for focusing on the monetary value rather than the gesture itself.
