A video of a 61-year-old Chinese woman gracefully performing the traditional Malay Inang dance went viral across social media, after fellow Twitter user and dancer Khairul Azhar tweeted the video.

According to Khairul, Koo Soo Ming, who is not a professional dancer, personally messaged him to share her take on the #InangChallenge, where people dance to the Inang dance, a traditional Malay dance that originated from the time of the Malacca Sultanate.

Khairul, who is also a part of a dance troupe known as the Nyala Dance Theatre told mStar that Koo is an avid fan of Khairul's YouTube page, where he uploads many dance videos. She also told him how she’s a huge fan of traditional Malay dances.

“I have never met her in person. We only interacted on social media, including Whatsapp. She is my follower on YouTube. Last month, she asked me about a song. She also asked me to teach her how to dance,” said Khairul.

“She said she was interested in Malay traditional dance and that she sees positive values in such dances,” explained Khairul who shared the video because he was impressed with Koo’s knack for dancing.

Koo shared the video last Thursday (14 May) as a token of her appreciation to Khairul for being her inspiration in the world of Malay dance. Koo said it took her only one day to learn and practise the Inang dance.

“I practised only for one day, but I watched the Inang dance videos for a few days because I wanted to familiarise myself with the steps,” Koo told mStar.

“I have been a big fan of traditional Malay dance since I was young. I also liked to watch Malay films and listen to Malay songs,” said Koo, who is also a retired Bahasa Malaysia and literature teacher.

Koo’s dance video has garnered more than 144,000 views and over 5,000 retweets, with netizens praising her elegant moves.

“Maybe this is what people meant when they say arts can unite us all,” wrote Khairul in his tweet.

Way to go, Koo! We’ll definitely be on the lookout for more videos of Koo’s dancing!
