Sugu Pavithra is already a household name for many Malaysians who have tuned in to her addictive cooking videos on YouTube. That said, Pavithra did not just win the hearts of Malaysians, but also of those abroad.
One of them includes a Hong Kong-based, Japanese YouTuber, iChang RM, along with her partner Jimmy who recently recreated Pavithra’s “Kari Ayam” at home.
In a 19-minute long video, iChang and Jimmy tried their very best to follow Pavithra's recipe, but it wasn’t as easy as it looks.
The first whipped out their phones to Google translate some of the ingredients to the recipe. As Pavithra conducts her video in Malay, it took them awhile to figure out the Malay names for ingredients such as ginger and turmeric.

Another problem arises when they realized that they don’t have the main ingredient to make curry; Baba’s curry powder.
However, this couple did not give up that easily as they started grinding condiments with their own mortar and pestle to make curry powder from scratch!

That’s not all. They were determined to achieve the authentic curry flavour, that they even went on a treasure hunt in search for banana leaves to use as plates, just like our local banana leaf restaurants!
They eventually found a large banana leaf at a nearby hill in their backyard and gave it a good rinse with soap in their bathtub.

Once all the cooking was done, they plated the delicious cooking curry on the banana leaf and served it with rice.
They also ate with their hands for that true Malaysian dining experience and had our favourite desserts, Onde-Onde and Badak Berendam too to complete the meal.
Judging by how satisfied they looked, we are a 100% sure that they had a delicious and scrumptious meal.

iChang’s video titled “ We made Kari Ayam at home” has gotten more than 400,000 views on YouTube and had even caught the attention of Sugu, who was thrilled that the couple tried her recipe. She was also impressed that they made the curry powder from scratch.

iChang and Jimmy have been travelling all around Malaysia, experiencing the rich Malaysian cuisines and documenting them all in her YouTube videos. From making Nasi Lemak and Roti Canai at home to ordering Nasi Kandar like a pro, they can’t seem to get enough of Malaysian dishes and we totally understand why!
