Video Of Man Chup-ing Parking Went Viral, M’sians Say It’s Better To Just Report Them!

With heavy traffic, impatient drivers and lack of easy parking available, driving in cities can be a stressful experience.

However, many Malaysians will agree to how annoying it is when you have been circling a parking lot for some time and finally find an empty place, only to find that there is someone there chup-ing the parking for someone else!

A video recently went viral on Twitter of two men who were reserving a parking spot by standing in the middle of the parking box.

The 35-seconds video, recorded by the driver, shows two young men who walked over to an empty parking spot to suddenly stand in the middle of it. It is believed that they were trying to “chup” the parking for someone else.

However, the driver did not stop and went straight in to park his car.

The two men are then seen walking away shamelessly after they were chased away by the driver.

The video went viral and has garnered over 215,000 views on Twitter, which also sparks debate among netizens about “chupping” parking.

The Road Transport Act 1987 Section 50 (3) makes it illegal for ANYONE to try to "reserve" parking spaces with objects like setting up chairs, motorcycles, flower pots, traffic cones, clothes drying racks, much like it is illegal to "chup" spots by standing in them.

Those found guilty of “chupping” parking as set under Section 119 can face a fine not exceeding two thousand ringgit or imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months and, in the case of a second or subsequent conviction, to a fine not exceeding four thousand ringgit or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding twelve months or to both.

So, the easiest way to deal with someone chup-ing parking is to REPORT THEM!

For those who would like to lodge a complaint, they may send their details via the following channels:

  1. WhatsApp to 011-5111 5252

  2. Email

  3. Call 03-88886412

Include complainant’s details (including IC number), location, date and time, license plate of vehicle, details of incident.

There you have it. Next time someone tries to chup parking, you know what to do. Report them!
