Malaysian Shares Experience Attending Malay Wedding in Thailand, “It’s Just Like the Old Days”

Malaysian culture is truly unique, a blend of various traditions, customs, and practices that come together to form a rich, vibrant heritage.

It's always heartwarming to see Malaysians around the world holding onto these cultural roots, even when they're far from home. The beauty of our heritage transcends borders, and it's fascinating to witness it in unexpected places, such as a Malay wedding outside of Malaysia.

A TikTok user recently shared their experience attending a Malay wedding in Krabi, Thailand. It was a moment of cultural pride, seeing familiar customs being upheld in a different setting, while still retaining the essence of a traditional Malay celebration.

The user highlighted some charming aspects of the wedding, recalling how much it resembled the old-style kenduri of Malaysia. From the welcoming sight of villagers selling goods along the roadside to the traditional sit-down dining where meals were served directly at the tables—something that has become a rarity at weddings in Malaysia, where buffet arrangements are more common today.

In Krabi, guests were even served extra rice in plastic bags, a small but endearing gesture. Interestingly, while most of the guests used spoons, the TikToker humorously noted that they were among the few eating with their hands, in true Malay fashion.

Another familiar touch was the giving of 'ang-pows' (monetary gifts) for the bride and groom. Guests were provided with envelopes to fill with money, which they then placed in a box near the couple—a custom deeply rooted in Malay weddings, no matter where they are held.
