There are several reasons why Malaysians celebrate Chinese New Year…
The celebration is centered around removing the bad and the old, and welcoming the new and the good. It’s also a time to worship ancestors, ward off evil spirits and pray for good harvest.
Ang pows or red envelopes stuffed with money are usually given out by the elders and married couples as a gift to the young and unmarried. Meanwhile, giving out Mandarin oranges is an indicator of ‘freshness’ which also represents wishes for long life and fertility to the ones receiving them.

“Though I work as a cleaner, and no one would want to come close because I smell, there are still kind people out there who would want to share their blessings with me,” he said.
