New Cluster Alert!

The Health Ministry on Sunday (20 September) announced the emergence of a new COVID-19 cluster in Penang, with two positive cases so far.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah said that the case, a 44-year-old local man tested positive for the virus during a screening at the international arrival gate in Sandakan, Sabah on 15 September. 

In his statement, Dr Noor Hisham said: “The second case in the cluster involved the man’s niece, who was a close contact and tested positive for COVID-19 on 19 September, and has been admitted to Hospital Pulau Pinang for treatment.”

Active case detection and close contact screenings are being performed with 16 people screened already. 14 tested negative while two were the COVID-19 patients.

The source of the infection is still being investigated, said Dr. Noor Hisham.

So far, Malaysia has recorded 52 new COVID-19 cases as of yesterday (15 September) and no new deaths.
