A 38-year-old man in Miri, Sarawak was given a 12-month prison term by the Magistrate’s Court for stealing a car to meet his friend last month.

According to the Borneo Post, the man was found guilty by the Magistrate on his own guilty plea to a charge under Section 379A of the Penal Code - Whoever commits theft of a motor vehicle or any component part of a motor vehicle shall be punished with imprisonment for a term of not less than one year and not more than seven years, and shall also be liable to fine.
A report was made by an 84-year-old man at the Miri Central police station after finding that his blue saloon car, which was parked outside of his house had gone missing at around noon on June 16th.
Police later arrested the driver and seized the car, and he admitted that he had stolen the car to go to Bekenu to meet a friend.
The 84-year-old man who had made a police report earlier confirmed that the vehicle belonged to him.
