The popular photo-editing app, FaceApp, has taken the internet by storm, with literally everyone using it to ‘swap’ their faces to see how they look like as the opposite sex.
However, the Federal Territories Mufti office yesterday (July 2nd) issued an Irsyad Al-Fatwa, prohibiting Muslims from using the face-swapping app.
The statement shared on their website said that altering a photo of one’s face using FaceApp and sharing it is prohibited (dilarang) in Islam.
“The use of FaceApp is akin to encouraging the tendency of changing God’s creation even though it is not done through physical means. Hence, prohibition is needed to curb the tendency to change God’s creation through the sadd al-zariah principle,” said the statement.

The office further explained that Muslims are prohibited from using the app based on relevant verses from the Quran that can be found in the statement on their website, “We reiterate that Muslims are not to use the FaceApp or share the images of faces that have been altered, or edit photos of faces to change them to a different gender.”
Using the app to make your face younger or older could mislead people from the truth, adding that people can’t predict what they will look like in the future as they are not meant to know the future.
