Liverpool’s Alisson Joins An Impressive List Of Goalscoring Keepers

Goalkeeper Alisson was the unlikely hero for Liverpool in their 2-1 EPL win over West Brom, heading in the winner off a corner deep into injury-time.

It makes him the first ever keeper in Liverpool’s history to score a competitive goal for the club.

So far, only six Premier League stoppers have managed to get their name on the scoresheet, although it is a bit more common elsewhere.

To mark Alisson’s inclusion in the new ‘club’…let’s take a look at some of the more famous goalscoring keepers.

Peter Schmeichel

The Great Dane was the first keeper to find the back of the net in the Premier League era during his spell with Aston Villa, scoring with a volley against Everton in 2001.

Schmeichel also famously netted the equalizer for Man United in a UEFA Cup tie against Rotor Volgograd in 1996.

Tim Howard

The American stopper benefited from freak winds and a lucky bounce when he scored for Everton against Bolton during their EPL match in 2012.

To be fair, it was actually an attempt by Howard to clear the ball…but the 101-yard looping goal was still impressive nonetheless, and remains a popular clip on Youtube.

Hans-Jorg Butt

Butt scored 26 Bundesliga goals during his spells with Hamburg, Leverkusen and Bayern Munich – all of them from the penalty spot.

He also holds the honour of scoring for all three of his clubs against Juventus in separate European matches.

Rene Higuita

The Colombian made international headlines for his famous ‘scorpion kick’ clearance against England in 1995.

But this keeper was also as impressive at the other end of the pitch, scoring 41 career goals with a number of little-known South American clubs.

Jose Luis Chilavert

No list of goalscoring keepers would be complete without the famous Chilavert, nicknamed The Bulldog for his intensity on the pitch.

He has scored a record eight international goals for Paraguay and netted another 59 at club level (including with Zaragoza, Strasbourg and San Lorenzo), mainly from free-kicks and penalties.

Rogerio Ceni

A World Cup-winner with Brazil in 2002, Ceni is officially acknowledged as the highest-scoring goalkeeper in football.

He has netted a mind-blowing 131 times for Sao Paulo – and also holds the record as the keeper with the most free kicks (62) and most penalties (70)
