When we see an ambulance or a fire truck with its sirens on, our first reaction is to give way to the emergency vehicle. But in our urgency, we may forget to stay safe in consideration with traffic flow.
Here are a few dos and don’ts when giving way to an emergency vehicle:
DO: The 45-degree method
If you are stuck in heavy traffic and aren’t able to switch lanes, one tried-and-true technique is the 45-degree method. Slowly turn your car 45 degrees away from the vehicle, so that it has enough space to keep moving forward.
DO: Slow down

In moderate traffic where all cars are moving, drivers should slow down so that the emergency vehicle can overtake them safely. In addition, you should AVOID doing the following when the vehicle is approaching you.
DON’T move your vehicle suddenly
It can get pretty tense for a driver when they have to immediately react to an emergency vehicle approaching them. Nevertheless, you must keep in mind the safety of other drivers when giving way. Do not make any sudden sharp turns or brake without warning.
This may result in an accident, further delaying the emergency vehicle from reaching its destination.
DON’T drive into the path of the emergency vehicle
A delay in the arrival of an emergency vehicle, could be a matter of life and death. A moderate emergency case can turn severe if the vehicle does not reach its destination quickly.
So be careful when changing lanes, and avoid driving into the path of the emergency vehicle,
DON’T tailgate the emergency vehicle
Tailgaters are an unnecessary distraction to the driver of the emergency vehicle and may lead to several issues.
For instance, the emergency vehicle might come to an abrupt stop from the unpredictable traffic. Tailgaters might use this opportunity to run a red light or drive against the flow of traffic, but this puts the driver and others in danger.
By following these dos and don’ts, you can help emergency workers reach their destination faster and safer.
