Job scams have been around for a while now, and they always pop up every so often on job recruitment websites. There’s nothing we can really do about it but to be more aware.

Recently a Twitter post revealed details of a company that has allegedly been scamming jobseekers, especially those who just graduated and are desperate to get a job.
People were quick to share their own experiences of getting interviews from other sketchy companies. Not surprisingly, there were a few who actually fell for such scams.
The best way to avoid being scammed (by job scams or other type of scams) is to use common sense and basic knowledge. Ask around – your friends, your parents, your lecturers or your counsellors. Google the company, ask around, and be smart.
Do your own background research – if is sounds too good, then it should be avoided.
- Offer letter without application - If suddenly a job offer comes into your inbox but you’ve never heard of the company or you don’t remember applying for it, ask them for more details of the role and the company. If your gut instinct tells you something isn’t right, DELETE the email and MOVE ON.
- Credit card information? - This is already a red flag. Most companies DO NOT ask for your credit card information. Never give out such data and leave the page immediately.
- High pay, minimal work - A work that requires less work but offers you more pay is probably just too good to be true. Don’t get too excited just because you see those numbers!
- Company’s online credentials - If you google a company, and it doesn’t come up anywhere – no websites, no social media accounts, or even news features in news portals… then, does the company even exist?
Trying to get a job is indeed a stressful and frustrating process, however, try not to just jump into the first opportunity that comes your way.
