Recently, we got the chance to speak to D’Lun Wong, who joined Walt Disney Animation Studios in 2019.

D’Lun Wong has been credited on several animated shorts as well as the global animated phenomenon, “Frozen 2”.

Hailing from Sungai Siput in Perak, he attended Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan Shing Chung and graduated from the Malaysian Institute of Art in Kuala Lumpur with a degree in graphic design.

After working as a graphic designer and 3D artist in Kuala Lumpur for a few years, he moved to the United States to further pursue his study of computer animation.

He continued to work at several different visual effects studios such as, Sony Picture ImageWorks, Lola Visual Effects, Method Studios, and DreamWorks Animation, where he found his specialty in crowds animation.

When we heard that a Malaysian crowds artist was working on the new Disney animated film, Raya And The Last Dragon, we were curious to know… what does a crowds artist do? To be honest, we didn't even know Crowds Artists existed until just recently!

According to D’Lun, a crowds artist is responsible to populate the background of each scene with people, animals, and creatures so that the scene will look more lively and busy, and more interesting to watch.

He also spoke about creating the authentic Malaysian pasar malam scene for Raya And The Last Dragon…
