In Sarawak, a teacher from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Kapit 2 sought assistance from the Kapit Fire and Rescue Department to transport a student from their longhouse to the school. Rising floodwaters in Jalan Bukit Goram, Kapit, had submerged the area under more than 1.2 metres of water, making regular transportation impossible.

The Fire and Rescue Department shared a video on their Facebook page, showcasing their efforts to ferry the student using a boat. “Special assistance to evacuate a student from SMK Kapit 2, following flooding at the student’s home. The student will be sitting for their SPM examinations tomorrow (16 January) and was sent to the school’s dormitory at the request of a teacher from the school,” the department stated.

This student, however, was not the only one affected by the floods. In Sibu, another SPM candidate’s parents had to call on the Fire and Rescue Department for help, as floodwaters rendered the main roads impassable.

Two firemen, equipped with a 4-wheel-drive vehicle, stepped in to ensure the student made it to their examination venue safely. During the operation, the firemen also assisted two members of the public who were stranded and needed to get to work.
