Hari Malaysia, celebrated on the 16th of September, commemorates the union of Sabah, Sarawak, and Malaya to form the Malaysia we know today.
It’s a day dedicated to unity, where we come together to honour our diverse cultures, traditions, and the deep bond that ties us as Malaysians. This year, the spirit of togetherness was beautifully captured in the most heartwarming way during an ordinary LRT journey.
A video posted on Xiao Hong Shu (RED) by @有狐綏綏 quickly went viral, showing a group of Malaysians on the LRT spontaneously singing the beloved classic, Balik Kampung. Many of the passengers were dressed in traditional attire, with several men draping sarongs over their shoulders, creating a wonderful display of cultural pride and unity.

The group was en route to the annual Keretapi Sarong event, a much-anticipated celebration where Malaysians proudly wear their traditional garments while fostering togetherness. This year’s event took place on the 14th of September, coinciding perfectly with the long weekend, and the atmosphere on the train was nothing short of electrifying.
One enthusiastic passenger even brought a sound system and microphone, adding to the festive spirit. Malaysians from all walks of life joined in, their voices harmonising as they sang Balik Kampung, making the LRT ride an unforgettable one. It wasn’t just about the song, but the sense of belonging and unity it evoked—reminding everyone on board of the simple joys that bring us together.
“It’s heartwarming when Malaysians unite. Today’s ride was truly worth it,” the poster remarked, capturing the essence of the moment.
As the train journeyed on, people weren’t just singing—they were swaying to the rhythm, united in their love for the song and the sentiment it carried. No matter their background, everyone joined in, showing that when it comes to the things that matter, Malaysians stand together as one.
In times where divisions may seem prevalent, this small but beautiful moment was a powerful reminder of what truly unites us. The woman who filmed it couldn’t help but note how everyone came together naturally, not just in song but in spirit, showing that at our core, unity is what defines us as Malaysians.
As we celebrate Hari Malaysia, let’s cherish these moments that highlight the best of us. May we continue to find joy in our shared heritage and stand united, now and always. Happy Hari Malaysia!
