According to a report by China Press, a Malaysian woman, Qin, travelled to Japan with her family in early January. However, she was admitted to the hospital after falling ill with influenza following a visit to a mountain peak in Hokkaido.

"After being hospitalised, I was given respiratory support due to a lack of oxygen. Communication with the hospital staff was difficult, even with a translation app, until we found a Chinese translator.

"I explained my condition, but the hospital staff only provided me with oxygen and intravenous fluids, even though I was still struggling to breathe," she said.

Despite having travel insurance, Qin decided to return to Malaysia for treatment upon realising the high medical costs in Japan. She informed the hospital that she could not afford further treatment and was required to sign a waiver releasing the hospital from any responsibility upon her discharge.

"My family was worried about me because I had not eaten anything. I was exhaling more than I was inhaling. After taking painkillers, I started vomiting the next day," she added.

Qin was admitted to a hospital immediately upon arriving in Malaysia. That night, she was prescribed more than 10 medications, while most patients typically required only two, "The doctor said I had to be placed in the intensive care unit (ICU) as my blood oxygen levels were unstable.

"I was hospitalised for five days and four nights. I did not return to work immediately after being discharged but instead went through a period of isolation. Now, I have fully recovered," she said.

Japan is currently experiencing a widespread flu outbreak, which has led to a surge in hospitalisations and medical costs for many affected individuals. For Malaysian travellers, it is crucial to be well-prepared when travelling abroad. At the very least, ensure that you have travel insurance covering medical expenses. While it may not eliminate all risks, it could significantly ease the financial burden should unexpected situations arise.

Anything can happen, and we never know when we might need urgent medical care. Stay safe!
