Recently, two children in Kelantan and Terengganu passed away due to heatstroke, and another case in Johor was initially suspected to be heatstroke but was later clarified to be septic shock.

To help prevent heatstroke, Dr Malar, a medical practitioner known for her educational videos on TikTok, shared some valuable information on how to recognise and avoid heatstroke.

Symptoms of heatstroke include confusion, altered mental status, seizures, loss of consciousness, hot and dry skin, and red or pale skin colour. If someone you know is experiencing these symptoms, it is crucial to call 999 and follow the steps below:

  1. If the victim doesn't have a pulse, start CPR immediately while waiting for the ambulance.

  2. If the victim has a pulse and is still breathing, try to bring their temperature down by moving them to a shady place, ensuring good air ventilation, and cooling down their body with water.

To prevent heatstroke, Dr Malar recommends:

  1. Drinking plenty of water, regardless of thirst.

  2. Avoiding drinks and food that dehydrate the body, such as carbonated drinks, caffeinated drinks, sugary drinks, and oily food.

  3. Staying in cool environments by using air conditioning, opening windows, and using fans.

  4. Avoiding crowded places and dark, tight, or multilayered clothing, which can limit air ventilation and cause the body to overheat.

As the heatwave continues in Malaysia, it is important for all of us to take care of ourselves and those around us.

Remember to stay hydrated, avoid drinks and food that pull water away from our bodies, and take steps to stay cool and comfortable. If you or anyone you know experiences symptoms of heatstroke, seek medical attention immediately.

Let's all stay safe and healthy during this challenging time.
