A group of Malaysian cinema-goers recently faced backlash online for displaying poor cinema etiquette before the screening of Kahar: Kapla High Council.
The incident was brought to light by Malaysian actor Mierul Aiman, who shared a screenshot of an Instagram story on his X account, @mierulaimanx. The story criticised individuals who had placed their bare feet on unoccupied seats in front of them, sparking widespread condemnation.
Mierul, who stars in the film, expressed his disbelief and sought opinions from the public. He questioned, "I’m sorry for asking, but is this common? This is my first time seeing this."
He also described the behaviour as “dirty and disgusting” and urged everyone to be more considerate in shared spaces. Mierul wrote that people should not assume public places are an extension of their homes, adding, “We can look stupid but don’t be stupid. It’s not that hard to show some respect.”
Social media users echoed his sentiments, with many expressing their disgust. One person commented that the behaviour was “rude and inconsiderate.” Another pointed out that confronting such individuals often leads to conflict, as “people like this are usually stupid and egotistical.”
Several others emphasised that this kind of behaviour should not become normalised. “It pisses me off to see people behaving like this,” one user wrote, adding that such actions reflect a lack of respect for public spaces.
Public spaces are shared environments that deserve mutual respect and care. Inconsiderate actions, like placing feet on seats or disrupting others, can ruin the experience for everyone. Let’s all practise good etiquette and ensure public places remain enjoyable for all.
