The surprise proposal happened on Friday, 2 August. Liu, a men’s badminton doubles player, knelt down and proposed to Huang at La Chapelle Arena right after she won the gold medal in the badminton mixed doubles event. Overwhelmed with emotion, Yaqiong immediately said yes, and the touching moment was broadcast on the stadium's video board, drawing cheers from the crowd.

In an interview on Douyin, China's TikTok equivalent, the newly engaged couple posed for pre-wedding photos with the Eiffel Tower as their backdrop while sharing their engagement story. Wearing matching light grey outfits, with Huang donning a veil, they radiated joy and excitement.

During the photoshoot, Liu appeared shy, prompting playful teasing from the show hosts. "You were so brave proposing in front of the whole world at the Olympic stadium. Now you’re shy to kiss your fiancée for our audience in China," one host quipped.
