These gentle giants have gained popularity not only for their relaxed and friendly demeanor but also for their unexpected companionship with an unexpected friend—a domestic ginger cat who has been frequenting the zoo for the past couple of years.

What makes their bond even more endearing is the fact that capybaras are actually rodents. However, despite their large size—reaching up to 1.2 meters in length and weighing around 65 kilograms—they have formed a remarkable friendship with a much smaller feline companion, weighing only about 4 to 6 kilograms on average.

The vibrant orange short-haired tabby, lovingly named Oyen, can often be found mingling with its capybara friends within the confines of the Kuala Lumpur zoo. The zoo authorities have wholeheartedly embraced Oyen's presence and have even shared heartwarming stories of the cat's adventures with the public.

According to the zoo officials who spoke to Bernama, it is believed that Oyen was abandoned near Zoo Negara, possibly due to financial constraints faced by pet owners during the pandemic. The zoo, which had temporarily closed its doors to visitors during that time, became a haven for cats left behind by their owners.

For the past two years or so, Oyen has found solace and companionship among the capybaras. Zookeeper Mohd Taufik Yazidbustami shared how they initially discovered the cat's affectionate bond with these gentle creatures. "When we first found him, we noticed his remarkable friendship with the capybaras. He would even share meals with them," said Mohd Taufik.

Recognizing the unique connection between Oyen and the capybaras, the zookeepers allowed the cat to stay, ensuring its health and well-being by closely monitoring for any potential illnesses. However, it wasn't until the zoo reopened in September 2021 that the wider public began to notice Oyen's delightful presence.

Visitors started capturing and sharing photos and videos of Oyen's heartwarming interactions with the capybaras, such as seeking shelter with them during rainy days or affectionately rubbing its head against its larger companions. The cat's gentle nature and undeniable bond with the capybaras quickly made it an internet sensation.

To honor Oyen's significance in their lives, the zoo added the cat's name to the capybara enclosure sign. "Oyen" is a clever play on the Malay word "Oren," meaning orange, which is commonly used to describe ginger cats in Malaysia.

These felines are known for their mischievous and playful nature, making Oyen a fitting name for this charming cat who has brought joy and warmth to the hearts of both zoo visitors and online followers.

The heartwarming friendship between capybaras and Oyen showcases the extraordinary connections that can form between different species, reminding us of the beauty and love that can be found in the most unexpected places.
