Recently, a video went viral on social media of a man, believed to be high on drugs, attacking firemen who were only trying to help him.

The incident happened at around 10.40 am on Thursday (15 October). The suspect, who is an event manager in his 30s, had allegedly punched a fireman after he crashed into two cars while his own vehicle burst into flames along Jalan Suakasih, Bandar Tun Hussein Onn.

The suspect then ran amok when firefighters and bystanders tried to stop him from approaching his car that was still on fire.

According to the New Straits Times, District police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zaid Hassan said that they received a report on the alleged attack following a three-vehicle road accident.

“In this case, firefighters were extinguishing the fire when suddenly the suspect emerged claiming to be the owner of the car. He wanted to approach his car but firemen on duty told him to calm down when the suspect suddenly became aggressive and punched one of the firemen on his left arm, before running towards the burning car,” he said.

A breathalyzer test was carried out on the suspect at the station which came back negative for alcohol consumption, but urine test results came back positive for methamphetamine.

The man is now being investigated under Section 353 of the Penal Code for using criminal force on a public servant in the execution of his duties, and it is punishable by up to two years’ imprisonment or a fine of up to RM10,000, or both.

Housing and Local Government Minister, Zuraida Kamaruddin has called for an immediate investigation into the incident.

In a statement, she said that action must be taken against the suspect.

“I also received information that the suspect involved was under the influence and checks on his vehicle found a sharp meat cleaver. Personally, I was shocked and hurt when I watched the video clip. Members of the fire department are one of the frontliners who have been working tirelessly. Their sacrifices should be recognized by society,” she added, as reported by Free Malaysia Today.
