27-Year-Old Malaysian Working in Singapore Shares How He Only Spends RM34 A Day!

A 27-year-old Malaysian has recently shared his thrifty approach to living while working in Singapore, where he manages to spend only about SGD10 (approximately RM34) per day. Jonathan Lim, a civil engineer, frequently shares insights into his cost-effective lifestyle as a Malaysian working across the border.

In his most recent TikTok video, which has garnered over 220,000 views, Lim discussed his daily expenses with the caption, "Part six: Is spending 10 dollars enough for a day working in Singapore?"

Lim starts his day with a complimentary breakfast of bread and cereal at the hostel he stays in before heading to the office via the MRT. For lunch, he allocates SGD3.60 (RM12.30) for a plate of economy rice, typically comprising sliced chicken, steamed broccoli, and a small portion of rice.

After work, he treats himself to a cream cheese bun for SGD1.50 (RM5.10) and then engages in a free workout session at a nearby public stadium instead of paying for a gym membership. For dinner, he purchases roast chicken from the FairPrice supermarket chain for SGD5 (RM17.20).

When factoring in his MRT expenses, his total daily expenditure amounts to approximately SGD13.10 (RM45). Lim remarks, "In general, SGD10 is more than enough to spend on a normal day," and hopes his video provides valuable insights for those planning to work in Singapore.

Lim also shares in his other videos that he follows a hybrid working arrangement, allowing him to work from home two days a week. To save on living costs, he spends most of his time in Kulai, Johor, and only resides in a Singapore hostel from Monday to Wednesday.

He commutes to Singapore on Monday mornings at 6 am, stays for two nights at a cost of around SGD35 (RM120) per night, and returns home on Wednesday evenings after work.
