The incident occurred in Mae Sot, near the Thai-Myanmar border. Liu, only 22 years old, repeatedly shouted for assistance, but his pleas went unanswered initially as locals believed the cries might be from a paranormal entity attempting to lure them into the forest. Some even speculated it could be a black magic practitioner seeking a human sacrifice.

Eventually, the villagers contacted the police, who dispatched rescue personnel to the forest. Guided by Liu's responses to their calls, they located him in the well and initiated a rescue operation that took approximately 30 minutes.

The story, reported by the Times of India and South China Morning Post, highlights the cultural fears that delayed Liu’s rescue.

Fortunately, his cries were finally taken seriously, leading to his safe recovery and putting an end to the villagers' supernatural suspicions.
