"Save Our Future”: PMX Urges Malaysians to Cut Down on Sugar and Lead Healthier Lives!

Did you know that Malaysia has one of the highest rates of diabetes in Southeast Asia? This alarming fact highlights the serious impact our fondness for sugary treats can have on our health. While we love indulging in sweet foods, excessive sugar intake can lead to life-threatening conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and more.

During an event in Port Dickson on 8th September, Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim urged Malaysians to take control of their health and the country’s future by being mindful of their sugar consumption. He emphasised that while it’s difficult to resist sugary foods, we must be more conscious of how much we consume.

“Please save the country, save the children, save our families, our parents by controlling sugar intake, not stopping it entirely,” PM Anwar advised. His message was clear: we don’t need to cut out sugar completely, but we must reduce the amount we consume to protect our health.

He stressed that neglecting our health today can lead to dire consequences in the future. Overindulgence in sugary foods doesn’t just offer temporary satisfaction but can cause long-term harm. PM Anwar suggested that Malaysians begin by reducing carbohydrates and incorporating regular exercise into their routines. “Exercise more,” he said, “don’t just jog during health month. Being busy is merely an excuse.”

PM Anwar also urged food and drink vendors to play their part in promoting healthier choices. He encouraged them to consider their customers’ health when preparing meals, reminding us that “we talk about AI and the quality of hospital education, but the knowledge on health is the lowest.”

This call to action is a reminder that maintaining good health is a shared responsibility. Simple changes, such as cutting back on sugary drinks or opting for healthier food choices, can have a significant impact.
