In a noteworthy initiative earlier this year, Malaysia's Minister of Housing and Local Government, Nga Kor Ming, announced the introduction of the "Toilet of the Year" award.
This exciting development was confirmed during his participation in a program with a local radio station. The award ceremony is scheduled to take place on October 30th.
The motivation behind this novel endeavor is a commitment to enhancing the overall quality and cleanliness of public restrooms nationwide. Minister Nga Kor Ming highlighted the significance of this endeavor, especially in light of Malaysia's plans for Visit Malaysia 2025, as reported by Oriental Daily.

He emphasized, "To improve the cleanliness level of public toilets across the country, I have proposed the BMW Public Toilet Plan starting this year. This initiative involves both the government and private sectors."
The primary goal is twofold: to bolster Malaysia's global reputation as a tourist destination and to prepare for the upcoming Visit Malaysia Year 2025.
The "Toilet of the Year" award is designed to serve as an encouragement for all establishments to raise their restroom standards. The winner of this prestigious accolade will not only receive recognition but also RM10,000 in cash, a certificate, and a trophy.
Minister Nga disclosed that efforts to improve public toilets in Malaysia date back to 2012, with the introduction of the "Local Government Public Toilet Hygiene Star Rating Guidelines." However, as of 2022, only 38% (1,096) of public toilets and 37% (9,695) of privately-owned public restrooms meet these hygiene standards
On a personal note, many have observed the positive changes taking place in public restrooms, with cleanliness on the rise.
