18-year-old national sprinter, Mohd Azeem Fahmi set a new record for the country in the 100-meter race on August 1st in the World Junior Championships in Cali, Colombia, clocking a lightning-fast 10.09 seconds.
Amazing!
In 2016, Khairul Hafiz Jantan won the Men’s 100-meter race, clocking 10.18 seconds at the Sukma Games and at the same time breaking the country’s current record.
Azeem’s new record was also enough to place him second among the sprinters running in the event, just behind Letsile Tebogo of Botswana.
Azeem is now qualified to advance to the semi-finals, and is also set to compete in the 200m event which will start on Thursday.
According to Free Malaysia Today, the Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu who lauded Azeem’s achievement said that Azeem will be sent to the US next year to further his studies and to further realize his athletic dreams.
