Johor Announces 6 January as Special Public Holiday for Civil Servants Amid Weekend Transition

The Johor state government has announced a one-off public holiday for civil servants on 6 January, to aid the transition to the state's new Saturday-Sunday weekend schedule.

As reported by The Star, the Johor State Secretary Office’s Human Resources Management Department issued an official circular on 23 December confirming the special holiday. The circular explained that the holiday on Monday would help civil servants avoid working six consecutive days, including Friday, 3 January.

Lee Ting Han, a member of the Johor state executive council, clarified the decision, stating, “The Johor government has agreed to set 6 January as a special replacement holiday solely for civil servants in the state, considering the transition to the new weekend schedule.”

Schools in Johor will also close on 6 January. However, the ongoing Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations will proceed as planned. According to the New Straits Times, Education Director-General Azman Adnan confirmed that exams for English and Tasawwur Islam will be held as scheduled.

"Candidates will report to their schools, and exam personnel, including teachers, will carry out their duties as usual," he stated on 2 January. He further assured that the Johor State Education Department would arrange for replacement leave for teachers and staff who are required to work on that day.
