In recent weeks, China’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention has reported a rise in cases of a new virus with symptoms similar to COVID-19: the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV). This comes shortly after the government’s announcement of a Norovirus outbreak in the country.
Hospitals in China are reportedly overwhelmed with patients suspected of having contracted HMPV, alongside other flu strains such as Influenza A. The SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) X page highlighted the situation, stating, “Hospitals in China are facing a severe ‘flu’ outbreak, including Influenza A and HMPV, which bears resemblance to the 2020 COVID-19 surge.”

Both paediatric and adult departments in hospitals are becoming overcrowded as the virus spreads among both the young and elderly. The page further noted, “Videos have shown long queues in paediatric wards late at night, with parents arriving early to secure treatment. Infusion rooms are also packed.”
One particular incident was shared by a blogger who attended a small gathering in Guangzhou. Following the event, he and his wife both developed symptoms similar to those of COVID-19, including high fevers, body aches, and headaches.
On December 25, the blogger, known as 'Please Fei Ge', shared that after attending the event in Guangzhou, he and his wife began feeling ill. They soon discovered that all 8 or 9 attendees of the gathering had contracted ‘A-type influenza’. To avoid infecting their children, the couple isolated themselves for three days, but continued to experience low-grade fevers.
While the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) has been detected in some countries, there is currently no significant increase in cases in Malaysia, so there's no need to worry. However, it’s always good to stay prepared and take simple steps to protect yourself and others. Here are some preventative measures to help reduce the risk of infection:
-
Wash Hands Regularly: Use soap and water, scrubbing for at least 20 seconds, especially after coughing, sneezing, or touching public surfaces.
-
Wear a Mask: In crowded or enclosed spaces, wear a mask to prevent the spread of germs.
-
Avoid Close Contact with Sick Individuals: Stay away from people showing symptoms of illness.
-
Cover Your Mouth and Nose: Use a tissue or your elbow when coughing or sneezing to avoid spreading respiratory droplets.
-
Disinfect Frequently Touched Surfaces: Regularly clean high-touch areas such as doorknobs, light switches, and mobile devices.
-
Stay Home When Unwell: If you feel sick, stay at home to avoid spreading the illness to others.
-
Boost Your Immune System: Eat a balanced diet, exercise regularly, and get enough sleep to keep your immune system strong.
By following these simple precautions, you can help protect yourself and those around you.
