Government Replaces Toll-Free Days with 50% Discount for Festive Seasons Starting 2025

In a bid to ease travel costs during festive seasons, the government has announced a new initiative that will see a 50% discount on all toll charges throughout the year. This approach replaces the former toll-free days while still offering considerable savings for motorists.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, as reported by Bernama, explained that transitioning from toll-free days to a 50% discount is a cost-effective measure.

Previously, providing eight toll-free days annually amounted to RM160 million in compensation paid to highway concessionaires. Under the new system, the government will spend RM80 million, effectively halving the expenditure.

The discounted tolls will be introduced during major festive seasons, beginning with Chinese New Year in 2025. This initiative will also extend to other significant celebrations, including Hari Raya Aidilfitri, ensuring that road users continue to enjoy reduced toll rates during peak travel periods.

Funded entirely by public resources, the discount scheme ensures that highway concession companies receive compensation to cover the shortfall, maintaining smooth and efficient highway operations.

This shift reflects the government’s efforts to implement more targeted financial assistance for the public. By offering substantial toll discounts instead of toll-free days, the new measure strikes a balance between providing cost relief to travellers and reducing the financial strain on government funds.
