On Monday (6 February), a devastating earthquake killed over 3,700 people across Turkey and northwest Syria, with freezing winter weather worsening the plight of the thousands left injured or homeless while hampering efforts to find survivors.

According to Reuters, the magnitude 7.8 tremor was the largest recorded globally by the US Geological Survey since a quake in the remote South Atlantic in August 2021.

The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) reported that the death toll in Turkey was 2,316, making it the country's deadliest earthquake since a similar magnitude tremor in 1999 devastated the heavily populated eastern Marmara Sea region near Istanbul, killing over 17,000 people.

Why was the Turkey-Syria earthquake so bad?

Seismologists say the tremors that rocked Turkey and Syria are likely to be some of the deadliest this decade. Here is what scientists say happened beneath the earth's surface and what to expect in the aftermath https://reut.rs/3DKyksA
