Set up as a self-advocacy group for Persons with Learning Disabilities in 1995 under the sponsorship of the NGO Dignity and Services, United Voice is now an independent, registered society. It is also the first society led by Persons with Learning Disabilities registered by the Registrar of Societies in Malaysia.
Despite having the necessary skills, talents and expertise, getting a job is often difficult for those with disabilities due to the challenges they face in a traditional work environment. In lieu of this, United Voice Malaysia created a Social Enterprise in 2003 by means of Project I'mPossible, which aims to help unemployed members find new employment.
In celebration of disabled artists, United Voice will be having an art exhibition in Mid Valley from 23rd September until 29th September (10am-10pm). Titled Step into My World, this exhibition serves as a platform for the artists to express their creativity and showcase their skills.
There will be an array of artworks and handmade Saori (Japanese weaving) products for sale. Proceeds will go towards helping transform the lives of people with learning disabilities. Those interested can also visit United Voice’s Art Gallery in Petaling Jaya, which features and sells artworks by their members.
Currently, United Voice has 140 members, including those with Down Syndrome, Autism, Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, Cerebral Palsy, Global Developmental Delay and other specific learning disabilities.
