In an incident that triggered many Malaysians yesterday, the Malaysia Basketball Association (Maba) made a rookie mistake by displaying the wrong version of our Malaysian flag during the livestream of the 28th MABA Milo Lum Mun Chak Cup 2019’s opening ceremony
The digitally displayed flag showed a five-pointed star and eleven stripes, very far from our fourteen-pointed star and fourteen stripes.
In a statement released on their Facebook page, Maba explained that their live broadcast team had accidentally put up the flag during the national anthem. Orders were immediately given to remove the display the moment the Executive Officer realised the mistake.

They expressed their apologies and asked for understanding as the mistake was unintentional and not meant to spread disharmony.

UMNO deputy president Datuk Mohamad Hasan himself took to Facebook to express his views on the matter.

He expressed his disappointment over how there are those who are still unappreciative and ignorant of the identity of our country. Mohamad elaborated that while the association took quick action and apologised, they should also understand why the incident triggered so much anger.

In his post, he explained that the account was seen to be monopolised by a certain race while their Facebook page and posters used only English and Mandarin. It was also pointed out that the competition was not conducted in the national language despite being a local championship. To make things worse, the apology was only in English and Mandarin. In his explanation, he said that MABA should release an apology in our national language if they truly wanted forgiveness from the rakyat.

What are your thoughts on the incident?
