Desperate times, desperate measures. We’ve all heard it before, but how far are you willing to go to avoid disappointing your future spouse and their family? For these two men, they were so committed to a lie that they dared to lodge false police reports.
According to The Star, a 39-year-old man in Bukit Mertajam, Penang was recently arrested for making a false report that he was robbed of RM39,000 in cash and RM7,000 worth of jewellery when he stopped his car by the side of the road on Jalan Besar Perai. Upon invesitigation, the police found that the reported incident did not happen. Instead, the man confessed to making a false report in the hopes of postponing his wedding because he was pressured by the bride’s family while he did not have sufficient funds for his wedding.
Separately, but also in Bukit Mertajam, New Straits Times reports of a 45-year-old technician who also lodged a false report, claiming to be robbed of RM10,000 in order to postpone his wedding ceremony as he also lacked the funds to meet the demands of the bride’s family. In his fabricated story, he claimed that on the way home, he was stopped by two men on motorcycles as he was passing by a printing factory. When the police reviewed CCTV footages, they found that no such incident took place. It was later discovered that the technician was a repeat offender and had lodged another false report back in 2010.

Both men will be investigated under the Section 182 of the Penal Code for making false reports and are punishable up to 6 months in jail or RM2,000 fine or both if convicted.
It seems like their weddings will definitely be postponed, but at what cost?
