Drugs, parties, and obscene content are just the right ingredients to get a movie banned in Malaysia.
The movie Hustlers, starring Jennifer Lopez, has all of that and more, and it has been banned by the Malaysian Film Censorship Board.
The star-studded film tells the tale of New York strippers who resort to criminal activity in order to get money from wealthy men in times of financial difficulty.
The Malaysian Film Censorship Board cited having too many scenes to cut that there would hardly be anything left to show as the reason for banning the movie completely. The movie was also criticised for its content which isn’t deemed appropriate for this country’s conservative views.
Malaysian Film Censorship Board chairman Mohamad Zamberi Abdul Aziz told AFP, “'This film contains too many scenes with too much excessive obscene content, and is not suitable for public screening”.
Square Box Pictures, the film's distributor in Malaysia, posted on Instagram, “We deeply apologise for the inconveniences caused to our beloved followers, fans of the movie, medias and partners” regarding the ban.
Movie bans and cut scenes are a common occurrence, and this isn’t something unexpected. What other movies will you be looking forward to?
