It’s no doubt that the Perodua Myvi is one of Malaysia’s favourite cars. Everywhere you go, for sure you’ll see several Myvis driving around. However, it looks like this fame has become the vehicle’s ultimate downfall.
Local Chinese daily, Guang Ming recently reported that more than 20 Myvis have had their tyres and rims stolen in Penang. Apparently, while old MyVi tyres are usually worth about RM350, the new Myvi tyres can be sold for a couple of thousand ringgits! That, coupled with the fact that so many Malaysians drive Myvis, the demand for Myvi tyres are high and thus Myvi tyre stealing can be quite lucrative.

According to the report, the thefts are believed to have been done by the same gang as the modus operandi used is the same. This is how the crime appears to be carried out: using several bricks, the thieves lift the vehicle off the ground and then they remove the tyres.

The thieves tend to operate in parking lots of flats and condominiums which are not monitored by CCTV. However, they have been known to strike Myvis parked by the roadside too.

Interestingly, even though there are luxury cars with rims that are more valuable, such as BMWs and Mercedes Benz, the tyres for these cars were safe while the Myvis tyres were missing. Nowhere is safe for Myvi cars now!

Timur Laut district police chief ACP Che Zaimani that the police have thus far only received one police report by a man on May 5, when two tyres off his Myvi were stolen. Che Zaimani has urged all victims to report similar crimes so that the police can gather more information and track down the culprits.
