If culture, emotions, music and theatre could be melded together and gifted, then Yasmin Ahmad’s films are truly a gift to all of us.
This month, in commemoration of Merdeka and Malaysia Day, Liver&Lung Productions will be bringing one of the legendary director’s films back to life while putting a little spin on it. Sepet, which is just one of many of Yasmin Ahmad’s heartwarming works, will be adapted into an immersive musical piece. This iconic film was a cultural milestone in our local cinematic history and with this, we can once again remember the legendary creative genius Yasmin Ahmad was.
Set in Ipoh, Sepet The Musical will tell the tale of two teenagers, Jason and Orked. Like a classic love story, romance blossoms between the 19-year-old Chinese VCD seller and the Malay schoolgirl who loves John Woo films. Played by Joshua Gui and Badrika Bahadur respectively, the duo have to deal with rising social and racial pressures.
Director Shafeeq Shajahan creatively makes use of a small budget and an intimate space to turn this into a nostalgic experience you will want to remember for a long time. He encourages the audience to come dressed in their best pasar malam attire, sit back, and enjoy the snacks available.
Held on 19th to 22nd September and 26th to 29th September at GMBB, tickets are available here.
