If you’re one of those drivers who consciously makes an effort to make it past a traffic light on ‘yellow’, you might wanna start following the rules and SLOW DOWN!
From now till December 31st, police will be conducting ‘Operation Red Light’, in an effort to book those who habitually run a red light.
According to statistics, 69,267 summonses were issued last year to road users for running a red light, while 52,170 summonses for the same offence were issued between January and November this year.
Motorcyclists topped the list with 26,764 summonses, followed by cars (20,751), lorries (2,208) and other vehicles (2,447).
Bukit Aman Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department director Datuk Azisman Alias said motorists ignoring traffic light rules and offences related to beating red lights are on the rise.
“We view this driving trend and attitude seriously as it can cause accidents and is worrisome to the public. We wish to remind all motorists to adhere to road traffic laws and those caught beating the red lights will either be issued with summonses on the spot or have their vehicle registration number recorded for further action,” he told Bernama.
Under road traffic laws, offenders face a fine of up to RM2,000 or up to six-months’ jail.
It’s unclear if the operation will be carried out into 2021, but how bout we just stick to the rules, yeah?
Drive safe, people!
