Following heavy rain in Kuala Lumpur, the SMART tunnel was closed off to traffic at 6.30pm yesterday and is in the process of being reopened.
This was done as a method to activate the flood system, by releasing water into the SMART tunnel and thus avoiding worse damage and floods in the surrounding areas.
The activation of the flood operation system saved prime areas like Masjid Jamek, Lebuh Ampang, Dataran Merdeka and Pasar Seni from flooding. Imagine the chaos that would have taken place had the reverse happened!
The primary objective of the SMART tunnel has always been to handle flood problems and it has fulfilled its function perfectly.
Users are asked to be patient while the process is ongoing, as the route will have to be temporarily closed.
Currently, water is being pumped out of the tunnel, and will be followed by a washing process. Following that, there will be mechanical/electrical checks and some other cleaning procedures to be conducted before the tunnel is cleared for use again.

This time round, the activation system redirected 1.3 million cubic metres of water, saving the surrounding areas!
The SMART team have asked that users lend their cooperation and to look out for announcements or updates about the operation status via media announcements and electronic notice boards (VMS). The public can also check www.smarttunnel.com.my, or the SMART tunnel’s Facebook and Twitter pages for further information.
