A Rapid KL employee was recently commended by the company, after she helped a very pregnant woman deliver her baby at the Puchong Prima LRT Station on Saturday (October 7th).

In the incident, 32-year-old Shahira Nurdiyana Rauf, who had herself only recently returned to work after her maternity leave, heard her colleague screaming for help at about 6:30pm, only to find out that she was in labour.

Shahira and a cleaning crew supervisor took the woman to a treatment room at the station while waiting for a medical team to arrive, but the baby wasn’t going to wait for anyone.

And so, Shahira became a “midwife” for her colleague, and helped successfully deliver her baby, before mother and child were taken to Serdang Hospital.

“I was nervous during the incident but I tried to remain collected with the safety and health of the woman in my mind," said Shahira.

“The experience of giving birth to two bright eyes and the motherly nature that I have also helped to handle the anxious situation,” she added.

Prasarana Group Chief Operating Officer, Datin Norlia Noah praised Shahira’s courage and her ability to have acted so quickly, and handed her a token of appreciation on behalf of the company.

She pointed out that all Prasarana frontliners are trained to face critical situations and manage basic medical aid, and even though being a midwife isn’t part of the job, she added that basic knowledge of providing first aid can help commuters.

Meanwhile, Shahira said she’s grateful that both mother and child are in good health.

Good work, Shahira!
