Teachers have expressed gratitude to the government for prioritising them with comorbidities to be included in the first phase of the National COVID-19 Immunisation Programme, which will start tomorrow (February 24th).
National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) secretary-general, Harry Tan shared with Astro Radio News the importance of getting them immunised.
“It is also our commitment to help keep the schools open, normalcy will return to the lives of the students and at the same time to the lives of the Malaysians and economy. As teachers also deal with the public, especially coming into close contact with their students, they are also at high risk,” he said.
This comes after the Education Ministry (MOE) listed some 55,000 teachers with comorbidities to be prioritised for the vaccination programme.
However, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister, Khairy Jamaluddin said the move is subject to supply, ahead of the full reopening of schools next month.
Meanwhile, Malaysians have been given a glimmer of hope with the additional supply of vaccines.
Khairy said the country is set to receive an additional supply of over 180,000 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine tomorrow, as the immunisation programme commences.
These vaccines will then be flown to Kedah, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan and Perak.
Pahang, Terengganu, Kelantan, Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan will receive the supply on Thursday (February 25th).
