Learning never stops, and 16 senior citizens proved that to be true when they graduated from “University of the Third Age” recently.

They are members of the Association for Lifelong Learning of Older Persons, which is also known as U3A (University of the Third Age). The 16 students of U3A Petaling Jaya received their certificates last Sunday after completion of their course.

81 year old Ignatius Chan who began taking harmonica classes at U3APJ last month said the classes have made his days better ever since his retirement from the banking industry over 20 years ago. He told Bernama that it brought back memories from when he used the play the instrument at a young age.

According to U3APJ president Albert Teh, “This place must keep moving in order to provide a chance for retirees to network and socialise with people in their own age group, which is something many seniors don’t have the luxury of doing. This is important because older people who are active tend to have fewer health problems as even in retirement, senior citizens can remain productive and active.”

Starting early this year, the centre now has over 200 students with 20 courses divided into various streams - from exercise, language and communication, living skills, and others, this is pretty much just like school! U3APJ offers courses for those aged 50 and above. For those who are keen, check out their site here
