Dispatch Rider Killed After Sleepy Driver Knocked Into Him

dispatch rider killed after sleepy driver knocked into him

A 34-year-old dispatch rider was killed along the Kuala Lumpur-Seremban Highway last night (December 1st), after he was hit by a car heading towards the Sungai Besi toll plaza.

It’s understood that the driver had fallen asleep at the wheel when it happened, and the victim was dragged some two meters before the driver realised what had occurred.

“The victim suffered severe injuries to his legs and waist and was pronounced dead on the way to the hospital,” said Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) chief Asst Comm Zulkefly Yahya.

He added that the driver, who was making his way back to his home in Seri Kembangan, was not under the influence at the time.

The driver has been remanded until Friday (December 4th), and the case is being investigated under Section 41 of the Road Transport Act 1987, which says that if you cause someone’s death by driving in a reckless manner or at a dangerous speed, you would have committed an offence.

The driver faces up to 10 years in prison, a fine as much as RM20,000, and suspension of his driver’s license for at least three years, if convicted.

Our thoughts go out to the victim’s family.

If you’re too tired to drive, DON’T! Or at least pull over by the side of the road to take a quick snooze.

And if you really need to sleep in your car, here’s what you should do.
