Earlier this year, the Education Ministry (MOE) revealed that COVID-19 symptomatic students, those undergoing quarantine, as well as those who test positive for COVID-19, will not be allowed to sit for their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM).
These include candidates whose parents or guardians exhibit COVID-19 symptoms, and they will only be allowed to take their exams during another session at a later date.
But the Pahang state government has found a way to ensure that SPM candidates, who have undergone required screening, can focus on their studies with a peace of mind, and sit for their SPM exam, which is due to start on February 22nd.

“Before the candidates arrive here, they will have to undergo the required procedures, including a COVID-19 swab test, to ensure that they are not infected. Once they arrive at the hostel, the candidates will be required to follow the standard operating procedures. The premises can accommodate 200 students,” said Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail.
“Each student will have their own room, along with internet facilities for online teaching and learning programmes. When SPM begins, they will sit for the examination at a designated hall at KUIPSAS,” he added.
The state Welfare Department will even arrange meals for the students.
It’s understood that the candidates will complete their SPM here and only return home once the situation is safe.
Health authorities will then determine when they can return home, provided their parents have fully recovered.
As it stands, candidates would need to present a letter from the Health Ministry (MOH) or their doctor proving that they are under quarantine or have tested positive before being allowed to defer the papers.
But this initiative allows students to sit for their exams as scheduled.
It’s unclear if the MOE plans to implement this nationwide, but let’s hope other states follow suit!
