What if we told you there are wild otters in our very own city? In this town of tall skyscrapers, cars and smoke, it is almost unbelievable that a romp of otters exist so close to us.

The popular Taman Tasik Metropolitan Kepong, a 222-acre public park is home to these mammals. Either they were great at hiding or we haven’t been very observant, because they were only recently spotted in the park’s lake!

Lucky visitors might catch sight of them during midday when they come out to hunt or sunbathe. This unusual scene is somewhat of a novelty to those living in the city as otters are usually found in coastlines, freshwater rivers, wild lakes, marshes, and oceans.
According to Malay Mail, the otters are speculated to of the L. perspicillata species, (smooth-coated otter), that is listed as ‘threatened’ on the animal conservation list. Being wild, these otters swim off if anyone comes too close.

The portal reported that while some knew of the otters’ existence, there were yet others who were taken aback.
Marketing executive S. Vijendran, 31, told Malay Mail that the first time he saw the otters was about a year ago. “I am also concerned if the authorities will be heeded, though. I mean, the lake has certain spots where fishing is not allowed. But you still see people doing so with no bother. If that is the case then I fear the otters will become even more endangered,” he added.

We sure hope the authorities will take the necessary measures to keep these creatures safe!
