In light of the Movement Control Order (MCO) period, we’ve all been told to stay at home, to contain the spread of the COVID-19 virus. But, what about the people who don’t have homes? What about those living in the streets before the MCO were implemented?

According to The Star, over 500 homeless people living in the streets in various parts of KL have been rescued and placed into temporary shelters during this MCO period.
KL Mayor, Datuk Nor Hisham Ahmad Dahlan said, these people are undergoing screening tests but none have tested positive yet for COVID-19.
An allocation of RM2 million will be used to provide mattresses, pillows and other basic necessities for the homeless, that consist of locals and foreigners from Indonesia, Myanmar, Vietnam, Japan, India, Syria, Egypt, Sri Lanka, Korea, Pakistan, and Somalia.
Besides that, they will be given three meals per day until the MCO period ends.
The process involved some 100 Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) staff members with the help of the police, Kuala Lumpur Welfare Department and Malaysian Red Crescent, who worked around the clock to gather them and their families from the streets and bring them into the shelters.
The community centres involved as temporary shelters are Sentul Perdana Community Center, Setiawangsa Community Center, Peace Multipurpose Hall and Ampang Hilir Lake Multipurpose Hall.
