The number of coronavirus cases that have originated from 1 Utama Shopping Centre in Bandar Utama, Selangor has been the talk of the town as of late, so much so that the cumulative cases have been dubbed the ‘1 Utama Cluster’.
But just how many cases are actually in this cluster?
Well, as far as everyone knows, 63 COVID-19 cases were detected from the mall, out of which 44 were security guards who tested positive.
But today (October 15th), the mall’s management issued a statement dismissing these numbers from the Petaling District Disaster Management Committee (JBPD), saying these 44 positive cases of security guards did not originate there.
“We would like to hereby state that the 44 COVID-19 positive cases of security guards mentioned in Petaling JPBD's report do not originate from 1 Utama and were not part of the 6,000 mass testing that we conducted,” it said.
The management further explained that it outsources its security guards from a third-party provider, and that the guards had contracted the virus through a dormitory - not within mall premises.
It maintains that now 22 positive results came back, after the 6,000 tests were run on tenants and employees at the mall.
To add to the confusion, JBPD also came out with a statement today, claiming that the total number of cases has now increased to 105.

As both statements were issued today, the official ‘1 Utama Cluster’ stats are still unclear, so it looks like we’ll just have to wait and see…
1 Utama was closed off from October 11th, after several COVID-19 cases were detected amongst mall workers.
