UN Study: AI Expected to Assist Workers Rather Than Replace Jobs

A recent study by the United Nations reveals that artificial intelligence (AI) is unlikely to completely replace most jobs, but it will play a crucial role in automating specific tasks.

Generative AI, capable of producing text, images, sounds, animations, 3D models, and other data, has the potential to assist in completing or enhancing certain tasks.

The report by the UN's International Labor Organization (ILO) emphasizes that most jobs and industries will only experience partial exposure to automation, making them more likely to be complemented rather than substituted by AI.

In essence, the primary impact of AI technology is anticipated to be the enhancement of work, according to the report.

The ILO's analysis indicates that around 5.5% of jobs in high-income countries could be exposed to automation by generative AI, in contrast to only 0.4% of jobs in low-income countries.

Despite this, the report identifies clerical work as the most susceptible to impact by generative AI.

Approximately a quarter of tasks within clerical roles possess a high potential for automation, as per the ILO's findings.

This trend is expected to affect women, particularly in wealthier nations.

"Thus, for policymakers, our study should not be seen as a reassurance, but rather as a call to formulate policies addressing the impending technological changes," the ILO stated.

As AI continues to shape the future of work, what are your thoughts on its impact? How do you envision the relationship between AI and human labor evolving in the coming years?
