Have you heard of the term “rubbernecking”? If you haven’t, rubbernecking is an act when someone turns their neck to get a better view of something they want to look at. We all know that Malaysians are well known for our “inquisitive nature”, especially when we are driving. Do you know any “rubberneckers”?
Here is an example of rubbernecking, which should serve as a reminder to all of us not to slow down on the road! An accident happened on the BESRAYA yesterday (18th August) at around 8 am near Wisma Minlon, where a bus caught on fire. The incident caused a massive jam from The Mines, affecting traffic on the Kajang Silk Highway and Jalan Besar.

But the jam was only made worse, people who were driving by slowed down to look at the burning vehicle, causing standstill traffic from all directions. Wazers also commented about the incident while some complained about the jam.

Another example happened this morning, when a hardware shop along the BESRAYA caught on fire. While fire and rescue works were taking place, drivers slowed down just to ogle at the incident, worsening the traffic jam.

So, the next time you see an incident on the road, don’t be a “rubbernecker”. Keep your eyes on the road, and just keep driving!
