We all have a list of places we want to visit, but how many have we actually been to?

In a study conducted by Agoda.com, it was found that Malaysian travelers are in the top 5 groups of travelers who have visited up to 10 countries!

Britons are at the top of the list, with the average Brit visiting 12 international countries, followed by Australians with an average of 10. The survey also discovered that almost seven out of ten people have visited up to 10 countries. In this category, Middle Eastern travelers from United Arab Emirates take the lead at 92% and those from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia at second place with 82%, followed by Thailand, Malaysia and Japan.

When it comes to those who have travelled to over 31 destinations, UK takes the lead, followed by Australia, Thailand and the United States.

In the Asia Pacific region, the Agoda study found that Malaysians were most likely to have visited over 10 countries with Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam falling behind respectively.

“Whether it’s looking to find yourself or just the need for a relaxing break in the sun after working hard throughout the year, it’s clear people everywhere – regardless of age or gender – love to travel,” said Timothy Hughes, Vice President of Corporate Development at Agoda.

Conversely, Americans travel the least, with a rather huge number of 29% who have never been overseas, with 13% of those over 55 year old who have never travelled to another country.

Surprisingly, Gen Z and Millennials are the biggest groups who have never travelled. In the 18-24 year old range, China takes the top spot at 49%, followed closely by Vietnam and Indonesia. When it comes to the 25-34 age group, US replaces Vietnam in the list. By the age of 45-54, a huge amount of 86% have travelled abroad.

Timothy added, “While it seems Gen Z and Millennials are yet to have the opportunity to travel as extensively abroad as other age groups, the gap between those who have never traveled internationally is shrinking fast. It will be exciting to see the potential cultural and socio-economic gains once those from China, Vietnam and Indonesia start traveling more”.

When it comes to gender, 19% of women have never travelled outside their home country whereas the figure stands at 17% for men. In the United States, Vietnam and Indonesia, there were significant differences in percentages of males and females who travelled to other countries, with Indonesia leading at 72% of women who travelled overseas versus only 65% of men who did.
